How to Resize a Stained Glass Pattern
Set the finished size of a pattern in inches or centimeters and keep every piece in proportion.
Resize in the tool
- Open the pattern tool and load your pattern.
- Choose a paper size and orientation under Paper & size.
- Choose centimeters or inches.
- Type a width or a height in the Design size fields. The other value changes with it, so the proportions never change.
- Or choose Move (M) and drag a corner of the design.
- Use Fit to paper to scale the design to the sheet, and Center to place it in the middle.
The size of the design is drawn next to it in centimeters and inches, so you can check it at a glance.
Paper sizes
| Paper | Millimeters | Inches |
|---|---|---|
| A5 | 148 × 210 | 5.8 × 8.3 |
| A4 | 210 × 297 | 8.3 × 11.7 |
| A3 | 297 × 420 | 11.7 × 16.5 |
| US Letter | 215.9 × 279.4 | 8.5 × 11 |
One inch is 25.4 millimeters, or 2.54 centimeters.
The design has to fit on the selected sheet. The tool does not split a large pattern across several sheets. For a bigger piece, choose a larger paper size.
What to check after resizing
- Small pieces. Shrinking a pattern also shrinks every piece. Many makers avoid pieces smaller than about 1/2 inch (12 mm) across because they are hard to cut and grind. Turn on piece numbers and look at the smallest ones.
- Lead line width. The lead lines you see are a preview. Choose the real came or foil width for your project and compare it with the pieces.
- Glass amounts. The cut list updates with the size, so check it again before you buy glass.
